Operational reviews

How fulfillment operations actually evolve.

Every fulfillment operation eventually accumulates rules that are specific to it. These reviews explain the operational problem, how it was approached, and what changed.

Some are based on named customers who agreed to participate. Others are anonymized to protect customer confidentiality. The operational lessons are the important part, and they survive the anonymization intact.

Operational domains

  • Cartonization
  • Rate Selection
  • Exception Monitoring

The pattern across all four is the same: the operation was already competent. What it lacked was a way to make its best decision every single time.

None of these operations were doing anything wrong. Each had reached the point where the thing keeping the process correct was a person's attention, and attention does not scale evenly across a Tuesday in peak season. Competence is not the constraint at this volume. Consistency is.
