String
Free tools

Free tools for your ShipStation account

Short answer: String reads your ShipStation account and shows you what is wrong with it — products shipping without weights or dimensions, boxes your team types in by hand, shipments priced on box size instead of weight, and packages that have stopped moving. The tools are free, they stay free, and they take about five minutes to set up at free.meetstring.com. New ones get added as I build them.

What it costs
Nothing, and it stays nothing.
What it needs
A ShipStation V2 API key, read-only.
Time to set up
Two to five minutes, then it refreshes daily.
Who can see it
You, and me.

Products missing data

Every product used in the last 30 days with no weight or no dimensions in ShipStation, ranked by how many shipments it touched. Missing weight does not stop a label printing. It means the label goes out carrying whatever the rest of the order weighed.

Package usage

Every box you actually shipped in, grouped by dimensions rather than by package record, so 10 × 8 × 2 and 2 × 8 × 10 count as one box. It shows how often each was selected from a saved package versus typed in by hand, which is usually the first time anyone finds out their team is retyping boxes the account already has.

Packing efficiency

Which shipments were priced on the size of the box rather than the weight, which is where dimensional weight quietly costs money. It also flags shipments where the contents measure larger than the box they went in — a contradiction that means either the product data or the package record is wrong.

Tracking

The oldest shipments that have not reported delivery, with every carrier event inline. ShipStation shows you a status. This shows you how long ago that status happened, which is the difference between a package in transit and a package that stopped moving nine days ago.

What usually happens

Most accounts surface something. Incomplete product data and boxes typed in by hand are close to universal, and neither is anyone's fault — they accumulate. If a number in your reports surprises you, that is worth twenty minutes of my time and yours.

What I can see

String reads your products, shipments and packages. It does not create labels, change orders, or write anything back, and you can revoke the key in ShipStation whenever you like. I can see these reports too — if something in yours looks worth a conversation, I may email you about it. Tell me not to and I won't.

What's next

A watchdog for store syncs, so you find out when orders stop arriving from a channel rather than noticing three days later. If there is something you would want in here, email me — that is largely how this list gets decided.
